It took 13 years but Britney Spears is finally free from the guardianship of her father Jamie Spears who, in the pop star’s own admission, was abusive and exploited every opportunity that came his way since the 2008 legal arrangement. That’s right; the Toxic singer’s father has been ousted from her conservatorship. It didn’t come easy; after a long-drawn public legal battle and a personal heart-breaking testimony, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge removed Spears from the conservatorship that gave him the liberty to control his daughter’s $60 million estate.
According to Variety, Judge Brenda Penny suspended Jamie Spears on Wednesday amid concerns over Britney’s mental health and stated that “I believe that the suspension is in the best interests of the conservatee. The current situation is not tenable. It reflects a toxic environment which requires the suspension of Jamie Spears, effective today.” Not just that, she also set a hearing for November 12 to determine whether the conservatorship will be ended entirely.
The ruling came after Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart had filed a petition to have her father removed with a plea which read, “Every day that goes by with him as conservator — every day and every hour — is one in which he causes his daughter anguish and pain.” Even during Wednesday’s hearing, Rosengart argued, “It’s about what Britney wants. She wants him out of her life today,” Rosengart said. “Britney Spears deserves to wake up tomorrow without her father as her conservator.” That and Jamie Spears’ surprise move in September where he filed to end the 13-year arrangement. While that is that, Vivian Thoreen, the attorney for Spears’ father, countered it saying that “There is not a shred of evidence for suspension. Mr. Spears has faithfully and loyally served. His record is impeccable.”
But like Britney’s lawyer added, “She doesn’t want a settlement with her father. She doesn’t want mediation. (Because) he wants money. He wants delay.” And honestly, going the past, the judge did what she had to do. She also appointed John Zabel, an accountant, to temporarily assume control of Britney’s estate until next steps are determined. Meanwhile, Spears’ conservator of her person, Jodi Montgomery, who manages her day-to-day wellbeing and medical decisions, will continue in that role for the time being.
“I’m so pleased and proud to say Jamie Spears is no longer a conservator. Jamie Spears has been suspended and he will formally be removed shortly. Jamie Spears and others are going to face even more serious ramifications.” – Britney Spears attorney Mathew Rosengart #FreeBritney pic.twitter.com/WkVDvlGTjY

How is Britney feeling? On cloud 9 perhaps. Or that’s what her Instagram says. A source also told Page Six, that she “burst into tears upon hearing the judge’s decision. She’s in shock and at a loss for words but literally jumping for joy. She hasn’t felt joy like this in 13 years.”
Even her fiancé Sam Asghari took to Instagram to celebrate the feat.
Needless to say, fans of the pop star are also overwhelmed with emotions. The thousands of supporters had gathered outside the Los Angeles courtroom ahead of the hearing, carrying signs with slogans like ‘Free Britney’ can take a sigh of relief. Obviously, the timelines are flooding with wishes including one from none other than Cher.

It really only took Mathew Rosengart 77 days to do what court appointed attorney Samuel Ingham refused to do for 13 years. #FreeBritney

The performance of Britney’s lawyer today in court — fighting vehemently on her behalf — is incredible, but it’s also what a lawyer *should* be doing on behalf of their client.
Imagine if she had gotten to choose her own lawyer 12 years ago back in 2009. #FreeBritney

Not only is Jamie suspended but Rosengart stated that the temporary conservator is only needed for 30-45 days at which point he demands the end of the conservatorship all together. Britney will be celebrating her 40th birthday as a free woman. #FreeBritney

#BritneySpears is free. Congratulations to everyone who helped bring this about, especially Britney, who, after 13 years in the wilderness, never gave up until she was finally heard.

Everything feels surreal right now. The last 2 years. The last 13. This moment. As fans we were given a false narrative for years and I’m just happy that narrative is finally corrected. Britney Spears is Britney Spears again!!!

The termination hearing is set for Nov. 12 and no parties have contested. In other words, the path to #BritneySpears ending her conservatorship is very clear & in the very, very near future.
