Pope Francis, on Wednesday, shared his views on a sensitive subject that has irked the sentiments of many people across the globe. Talking about parenthood, the pontiff blasted couples opting for pets over children by calling them ‘selfish’. “Today … we see a form of selfishness. We see that some people do not want to have a child. Sometimes they have one, and that’s it, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children. This may make people laugh but it is a reality,” the 85-year-old shared his views on the global decline in birthrates at a general audience at the Vatican, earlier this week.

The Pope even urged couples to not be afraid of having kids. “Having a child is always a risk, but there is more risk in not having a child,” he added. Furthermore, he continued, “Denial of fatherhood or motherhood diminishes us, and it takes away our humanity. And in this way, civilization becomes aged and without humanity because it loses the richness of fatherhood and motherhood. And our homeland suffers, as it does not have children.”

While the Pope shared his views on the so-called ‘demographic winter’, his comments didn’t go down well with pet owners and lovers, who took to their respective social media handles to express their discontent. Check out a few reactions to the Pope’s comment here:

Pope Francis even suggested couples who were not able to have children due to biological reasons to consider adoption. “How many children in the world are waiting for someone to take care of them?” he concluded.
