The Indian Women’s squad, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, decimated South Africa in the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, lifting their historic first. The stage was set in the semifinals with the brilliant century by Jemimah Rodrigues, whose unbeaten 127 against the mighty kangaroos paved the way for the Women in Blue. In the finals, the gals posted a decent 298 for the loss of seven wickets, led by a comeback fiery knock of 87 (78) by Shafali Verma, who was declared the Player of the Match for her performance with both bat and ball (2/36 – 7). Despite the heroic century by Laura Wolvaardt (101/98), the Proteas were packed home at 246 in 45.3 overs.

The 52-run victory over South Africa Women’s team made India the only non-westerner squad to lift the World Cup trophy after England (four times), Australia (seven times) and New Zealand (once), in the last 25 years.

Why did it take so long for the Indian Women Cricket team to arrive on the global platform? The Guardian scathingly writes,

Partly, this is a reflection of the broader status of women within Indian society. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, India is one of the worst-performing countries in the world when scored on key gender equality benchmarks (ranked 131 out of 148). The main decision-makers and shakers in Indian cricket—as across the world—are men: the products of a society where women are still seen as the ones whose defining role in cricket is to make the tea.

Meanwhile, a young fan’s interview after the team’s win is going viral, partly ‘cuz it is adorbs max and primarily due to her delivery. The gal says

I don’t have any words to explain the most. The only thing I just want to tell you is that each and every player who played today in the playing 11 contributed their best. What credit I just want to give is one of the players that goes to Deputy Sharma and Shefali Verma like they both played very beautifully and I just don’t want to say anything like…

She adds

The fan further states

You would get emotional the patience the dedication, and the love they showed today. Um, I think I have to shut my mouth here because the love the dedication not only me the players on the field playing 11, the standbys the coaches and all the supporters who had came in large quantities at the stadium

She further adds

what I want to say they performed very beautifully in each and every match

The internet erupted in hilarious reactions and memes over the interview, mostly lauding the kid’s camera charisma. Some users felt “she was mimicking Donald Trump.” Others compared her to the viral ‘Apparently Kid. One user quipped, “Her inglish is better than my 10 jeneration kombined.”
