There is no denying that Squid Game has topped every TV chart there is and has emerged as a global phenomenon that the internet can’t stop obsessing about. From memes to real-life renditions of the grisly game (without the violence of course), it is the talk of the town by all means. The Korean survival drama has not just stumped peeps at Netflix including co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos who had admitted that “Squid Game will definitely be our biggest non-English language show in the world, for sure. There’s a very good chance it’s going to be our biggest show ever. We did not see that coming, in terms of its global popularity.” But the twister thriller that was first released on September 17 has since gone on to become the first South Korean series to top the US Netflix chart and how! By leaving Netflix’s previous rage Bridgerton behind and officially reaching 111 million fans, that’s how.

However, not everyone is thrilled about the show. And no, I’m not talking about Bollywood buffs who were convinced that Luck, yes the Sanjay Dutt and Imran Khan starrer, is the OG Squid Game.
I’m talking about Pakistani Twitter that is riled up because the show has a Paki character, Ali which has been played by Indian actor, Anupam Tripathi. It has sparked a debate about Pakistani representation in TV and shows rightly. Including a similar instance from Money Heist. See for yourself.

Meanwhile, Tripathi whose Instagram following went from 3,000 to three million in a matter of days was quoted saying, “The love that I am getting after the show is growing every day. It feels great to be part of such a historical thing. At the same time, it (fame) is also new to me. So, I am still observing myself, trying to express myself and enjoy it as much as I can.” He also added that “the show suddenly became so huge that it was unexpected. We never imagined this kind of response. I still remember the day of the release, till 4 pm, my life was okay, but after 5 pm, everybody started talking about my role, and I saw the love pouring on Instagram.”
So much so that fans are also wondering about the second installment of the hit series. And the good news is the writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has spoken about the possibility of a sequel too. While he admitted that he doesn’t “have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2”, the good news is that the possibility of a second season has not been ruled out yet. Dong-hyuk told Variety, “It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors,” he added.
