He said in an interview with Total Film, that he had just finished working on the Planet Of Apes Movies, when he was offered to direct the new film from the DC Universe, The Batman. Earlier Ben Affleck was directing this film and after he left the set, Matt Reeves came on board.

In the interview, Matt Reeves said “When I was working on the script and got deep into the script, Joker hadn’t come out yet. I didn’t know what Joker was or what it was going to be”. He said that he came to know about joker when he went too deep into the script of The Batman.

Matt Reeves further added that “Joker was always meant to be a very specific standalone that Joaquin and Todd were doing. There was never really any discussion of crossover”.

Reeves believes that the character, the Joker, is not meant to feature in some other lead character’s movie as it has the potential to perform very well on its own.
