A gay couple in Hyderabad tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony that reportedly took place on the outskirts of the city on Saturday, December 18. The queer partners – Supriyo Chakraborty, 31 and Abhay Dang, 34 exchanged their vows in a joyful first for the state of Telangana. The wedding ceremony which was officiated by their friend Sophia David followed Bengali and Punjabi traditions as per reports on India Today. Chakraborty and Dang walked down the aisle and were pronounced husband and husband!
In a time where same-sex marriages are not legally recognised in India, the wedding is a promising move towards normalising the celebration of queer relationships in the country. Talking about the evening, a wedding guest told the news portal, “Spent a rather different evening today. Attended a gay marriage at a resort close to Hyderabad between a faculty member of the Institute of Hotel Management and a senior manager of Amazon. The marriage vows were administered by a former manager of Deloitte who is a transvestite. The families of the couple and a large number of their friends were there to witness an event that reflected how India is changing slowly but surely.”

In India, gay sex was decriminalised back in 2018 but currently, there is still no law allowing legal same-sex marriages. So the couple’s wedding isn’t legally recognised. Despite these uncertainties, Chakraborty and Dang wanted to make their relationship official, as they should.
The couple has been together for eight years. “Our parents weren’t initially the most supportive. However, they also didn’t disapprove of it either. They decided to give us and themselves a good amount of time to introspect and come to a better conclusion. Now, we have their acceptance,” said Supriyo.
