The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to do away with customs and bond-related obstacles to expedite the growth of the textile and apparel industry. A BGMEA delegation headed by president Faruque Hassan made the call during a meeting with NBR chairman Abu Hena Mohammad Rahmatul Muneem.

The association also called for simplifying business procedures like the inclusion of new raw materials and other related materials with their harmonised system (HS) code in the bond licenses.

Hassan said while there is opportunity to raise garment exports, the industry faces several challenges. Business procedures should be simplified for the apparel industry to stay competitive in the global market, he said, seeking NBR support in this regard.

A working committee was later formed involving high officials of NBR, bond and customs and BGMEA.

The committee will work to identify problems related to customs, bond and other relevant issues being faced by the apparel exporters and recommend steps to address them.
