Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, 92, breathed her last on February 6 after she was admitted to a hospital owing to COVID-19 complications. Her funeral was held with state honours. In attendance were several Bollywood stars including Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan who paid their respects to the late singer. In a moment from the funeral that caught everyone’s attention, Shah Rukh Khan was seen offering a dua – a sweet gesture that won hearts as he stood hands raised alongside his manager Pooja Dadlani.

The photo instantly went viral and it was largely seen as a wholesome example of secularism in India. However, some netizens had a rather nasty allegation to make. They alleged that Shah Rukh Khan spat on Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains based on a video where he can be seen blowing to ward off evil which is a common gesture in Islam. After a slew of Islamophobic attacks, fans clarified that it was simply a prayer. Many celebrities also came out in support of SRK including Shilpa Rao, Urmila Matondkar and more.

Shilpa Rao tweeted sharing her love for SRK.

Urmila Matondkar shared a Tweet that read, “Not spitting, it is called blowing prayers. This civilization, culture is called Bharat.”

Swara Bhasker in her tweet wrote, “Shahrukh is still praying but the mentality of these haters deserves to be spit out of this country!”

Shah Rukh Khan’s sweet gesture had the internet divided. It was applauded by many who saw it for what it really was:
