Interviewer Stuns Hyderabad Student Applying For F1 Visa With Tough Technical Questions; Here’s What Happened Next

A Redditor shared their experience at the Hyderabad Consulate while applying for the F-1 visa. The student who completed their undergraduate studies in April 2025 was interviewed by an individual whom they described as “a white male VO in his 30s.”

For the unversed, this non-immigrant visa is specifically availed by students to access higher education in the US. The F-2 visa is granted to the spouses and children, while the F-3 visa is granted exclusively for Mexican and Canadian nationals. While the F-1 visa is applied for by students to pursue higher studies in American universities, the same can be availed for a secondary school education, which is grades 9-12.

During the interview for the F-1 visa, the person asked some routine questions including the names of the college applied for, career prospects etc. However, the process took a bizarre turn when the interviewer suddenly started asking the student technical questions such as What’s the difference between Array and Linked List? • What is Linear Regression?

The questions then again moved on to the universities applied for and the track. The interviewer finally asked why the student picked Applied Data Science. “Because,” the student added, “it offers industry-oriented courses that align with my career goals and will equip me with practical skills useful in the field.”

After a brief pause the interviewer quipped (to the utter shock of the applicant, ““Unfortunately, your visa has been rejected. You’re welcome to reapply.”

The F-1 visa application was rejected under the under the section 214(b), which the fellow Redditors explained

A visa denial under Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) typically means the consular officer wasn’t convinced you intended to return to your home country after your studies.”

Users suggested that the applicant reply with confidence and indicate their plans to return after studies to get the F-1 visa approved.
