To say that the award season is unpredictable this time around would be an understatement. From A-list performances to late entrants in the awards race, a lot has happened in the past year. The nominations for the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards that honours the best performances in films and TV are out and it is snubs and surprises galore! Leading the film nominations are House of Gucci with Lady Gaga placed amidst a very competitive Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category that includes Olivia Colman and Power of the Dog which got several nods including Benedict Cumberbatch in the running for Male Actor in a Leading Role alongside Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington, Will Smith and more. But the SAG jury managed to snub Kristen Stewart hard despite her glorious Princess Diana in Spencer. How does one overlook that? Meanwhile, Korean drama Squid Game’s multiple nominations came as a pleasant surprise.

Between the ensemble casts of West Side Story which didn’t make the cut and House of Gucci that bagged a large chunk of mentions defying expectations, here are the most shocking snubs and surprises from the SAG Awards 2022 nominations:

Snub: Kristen Stewart, Spencer

The only way our girl Kristen Stewart is getting snubbed for her stunning performance in Spencer is if the jury didn’t watch the film at all. Stewart’s Princess Diana act was so dazzling, audiences and critics couldn’t look away. But somehow, the SAG nominations arrived without a mention for her in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a motion picture category. This is objectively the biggest snub I felt on the list.

Surprise: Squid Game’s history-making nominations

Squid Game, the hit Korean drama that had viewers hooked to Netflix is a fan favourite so it isn’t entirely surprising that it made the cut. But what makes the nod unexpectedly better is that actors Lee Jung Jae and Jung Hoyeon each earned nominations in the male actor and female actor in a drama series categories respectively along with a collective mention for the cast. The show made history at the SAG Awards as the first Korean show and the first non-English show to be nominated. Their reaction to the win is delightful.

“I’m speechless and beyond excited to be nominated, not just individually but for our entire Squid Game team!” wrote Lee Jung Jae in a post.

Meanwhile, Jung Hoyeon was thrilled to be mentioned alongside fellow nominees Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. “I was truly taken by surprise that I was nominated. I’m just happy knowing that my photo is going to appear alongside that of Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Elisabeth Moss, and Sarah Snook,” she wrote

Snub: Rachel Zegler and the ensemble cast of West Side Story

The only nod West Side Story received as Ariana DeBose’s for female actor in a supporting role category and it’s well deserved. But the film directed by Steven Spielberg landed amidst Oscar buzz so it’s snub in the ensemble category and the absence of Rachel Zegler in the female lead actor category is rather unexpected. It’s safe to say the musical’s ensemble carried the show where the lead stars couldn’t. Meanwhile, the entire cast of Don’t Look Up and House of Gucci made the cut among others.

Surprise: House of Gucci leads nominations

The SAG Awards just really showed up for the big ridiculous movie that House of Gucci was. Sure, Lady Gaga deserves her nod for the best female actor with her sizzling performance as Patrizia and the film is full of A-listers. But Ridley Scott’s true crime flick got more nods than expected. The fact that the film got into the ensemble cast category while The Power of the Dog didn’t is frankly puzzling.

Snub: The Power of the Dog’s ensemble cast

The Power of the Dog, Jane Campion’s underdog entry into the awards race received rave reviews. Its stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristen Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee won separate mentions in the outstanding performance by a male and female and supporting actor. But the film didn’t get a nomination for its ensemble cast. While this was a mild snub, the film clearly ran on the tight collective performance on the cast together and that deserved recognition over individual performances.

Snub: Alana Haim, Licorice Pizza

Alana Haim’s breakout debut performance in Licorice Pizza seemed to be forgotten. The Paul Thomas Anderson film is Best Picture material and Haim had a huge part to play in it. Looks like she was sadly overlooked amidst the tough competition in the female lead category that’s populated by Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Colman, Jennifer Hudson and Jessica Chastain.

Surprise: Bradley Cooper, Licorice Pizza

Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper who was in the film for a brief appearance earned a nomination for supporting actor. Of course, Cooper is an amazing actor but there were certainly other contenders for the spot – take the male actors of Belfast which is the Best Picture race for example. To be fair, the entire supporting cast category had a bunch of surprises. And is it just me or did Ben Affleck earn a nod for being Ben Affleck?

Snub: Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Pose

MJ Rodriguez is a revelation in every season of Pose but especially in the final run. The actor received a Golden Globe for her role in the series and in the process made history as the first transgender actor to win the honour. So it looked like Rodriguez was poised to collect another nomination this awards season. But it didn’t happen at SAG Awards.
