Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who has been embroiled in a legal battle with renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar since 2020, was recently granted an exemption from the defamation case after her lawyer cited sickness as the main reason for her absence. In another petition presented by Kangana’s lawyer on Tuesday, he requested the court to grant her lawyer to record her statement post which her presence would not be really needed in the court. But the court seemed to deny this request as the law states the accused person to appear before the court and record their statement.

While Akhtar’s lawyer opposed the exemption, he even alleged that the trial is being delayed because of Kangana’s absence and therefore asked the court to accept their application to issue a non-bailable warrant against the actress which got rejected, as per an NDTV report. The report quoted Akhtar’s lawyer stating, “The court rejected the demand for issuance of a non-bailable warrant. The next hearing will be on February 1 at Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate.” Meanwhile, the ‘Manikarnika’ actress, who attempted to transfer the case to another court previously, is expected to apply to the Bombay High court next.

Javed Akhtar had filed the defamation case against Kangana in November 2020 for reportedly dragging his name in her conflict with actor Hrithik Roshan. In his defamation complaint filed by Akhtar, the renowned lyricist has stated that Kangana had mentioned his name on national television while talking about the ‘suicide gang’ in Bollywood.

Kangana, who was honoured with the Padma Shri Award along with other B-town personalities like Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor and singer Adnan Sami last year, has a long list of interesting projects like ‘Tejas’, ‘Dhaakad’, ‘Emergency’, ‘Manikarnika Returns: The Legend Of Didda’ and ‘The Incarnation: Sita’.
