The K-pop industry has given the world some iconic music and wildly popular idols. As the Hallyu wave continues to sweep the world, Korean music seems to be diversifying. At present there are very few K-pop idols who don’t hail from South Korean but, some artists have managed to crack the highly competitive game. And now, it looks like we are about to have our first-ever Indian K-pop star. Shreya Lenka, an Odisha-based 18-year-old is in the last audition round that will determine if she gets selected to join the K-pop girl group, Black Swan.

Shreya Lenka is well on her way to becoming the first Indian K-pop idol. But before that, she has to defeat another contestant in the final auditions – Brazil’s Gabriela Dalcin. As per reports on the local news portal, Oshida Bytes, Lenka is currently in training to become an idol with DR Music Entertainment in South Korea. She is an Odissi classical trained dancer, singer and yoga practitioner. As per reports, Shreya is a K-pop fan and found out about the audition on social media. She is also learning the Korean langue and honing her skills.

“Since I have a deep voice, I faced difficulty in finding the right vocal trainer. My grandmother helped me find one. She took me to a Hindustani classical music teacher, who taught me twice a week. But, for the western songs, I had to rely on online videos and self-learning,” she told the portal.

Lenka’s win will also be a huge step ahead for diversity. K-pop group Black Swan made their debut in 2020 with their album ‘Goodbye Raina’ and have since been mired in controversies. The group’s leader Hyemi left over an alleged scam. Auditions are currently being held to find a fifth member and Shreya Lenka is in the running.

It remains to be seen if the artist can bag the win and open doors for Indians in the K-pop industry.
