For a moment in 2021, theatres reopened in India and movie-goers witnessed some major crowd-pleasers like 83 and Spider-Man: No Way Home which is now the third highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country. The audience reception of these films, sparked new hope for theatrical releases set for 2022. This was going to be the year we see a return to the big screens. But alas, a fresh and terrifying surge in COVID-19 cases and the Omicron scare has stalled movie release plans all over again, just when things were beginning to go back to normal.
On Tuesday morning, it was announced that Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam, a film fans were looking forward to has been postponed. The news came after the release date of several other anticipated films like RRR, Prithviraj and more were pushed in light of recent developments. Some of these titles have been in the pipeline since the beginning of the pandemic. And now, it looks like we have some more waiting to do.
Here are a bunch of movies that have been postponed owing to the rise in COVID-19 cases their new release dates:
RRR
RRR starring superstars Jr. NTR, Ram Charan and Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn was one of the most exciting releases of 2022. The movie was supposed to launch on January 7 after a slew of delays. However, given the current situation, the makers have announced that it has been delayed indefinitely. This is a major hurdle for the film’s studios as the first posters and teasers of the film arrived in 2020. The decision to delay the release is likely linked to avoiding losses at the box office.
Prithviraj
Prithviraj featuring Akshay Kumar in the lead role alongside debut actress and former Miss World Manushi Chillar is another film that announced a delay in release. Based on the life of Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan, the period drama is expected to be a big screen entertainer. But it’s going to be a while before fans get to watch it. The film was initially due for a January 21, 2022 release and has been pushed.
Radhe Shyam
Prabhas and Pooja Hegde starrer has also joined the list of films postponed amidst the pandemic yet again. Yesterday, the director reassured fans that the film will not be pushed as the increasing number of cases stirred speculation. However, today morning it was announced that Radhe Shyam will not hit theatres on January 14, 2022, as planned. The official statement explained that fans will have to wait but didn’t mention a new release date.
Jersey
Starring Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur, Jersey was eyeing a December 2021 release. The sports drama which is a remake of a Telegu film of the same name has since been postponed. Currently the makers haven’t decided on the next release date. In the meantime, rumours of the film arriving on a streaming platform are doing the rounds of the internet.
