On Sunday, India woke to the devastating news of the ‘Nightingale of India’ – Lata Mangeshkar’s demise. The singer, aged 92, was declared dead after she was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital due to COVID-19 complications as per multiple reports. The cause of death was multiple organ failure. Her mortal remains were brought to Mumbai’s Shivaji Park where her funeral was held with state honours. Among the attendees who gathered to pay respects were Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
In a now-viral video, Shah Rukh Khan who attended the funeral with his manager Pooja Dadlani was seen offering his respects with a dua. A picture of the star raising his hands in prayer is also doing the rounds of the internet and while many are touched by the gesture, some netizens reacted to the video alleging that he spat on Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains. Here’s what led to the wild assumption:
Did SRK just spit while paying his last respects to #LataMangeshkar? @totalwoke2 @BhaiiSamrat @randm_indianguy @VarunKrRana @ElvishYadav @MeghBulletin @engineer_inside pic.twitter.com/LI0RPCS38o

Listen @iamsrk, Lata Mangeshkar’s funeral was done according to Hindu rituals and nobody asked you to spit there. And it wasn’t necessary for you to remove your mask to bow your head.

The actor was offering a dua and blowing to ward off evil. This is a common gesture in several Muslim cultures. So no, Shah Rukh Khan did not spit at Lata Mangeshkar’s funeral, that’s just your islamophobia talking. Fans clarified the rumour that began doing the rounds of the internet.
Unreal that ppl actually think one of the most prominent figures in India spat on the mortal remains of a Bharat Ratna in full media glare.. 😐 #srk #LataMangeshkar

Shah Rukh Khan reading a dua and blowing on Lata ji’s mortal remains for protection and blessings in the next life. Cannot comprehend the level of bitterness of those saying he is spitting. pic.twitter.com/JkCTcesl86

Shameful that some are spreading religious hatred in name of Shah Rukh Khan while he performed Dua at #LataMangeshkar funeral. Are we still in a Secular India or can we still put such ppl spreading hate behind bars? #ShahRukhKhan

To be able to spin Shah Rukh Khan’s performing a Dua and blowing on Lata Mangeshkar, a sign of respect and blessing in his religion, to a defiling act like spitting only proves that so many out there only think about how to demonise Muslims next. pic.twitter.com/c9gfGGQXAz

Many of the hate tweets came from accounts with right-wing affiliations. The fact that so many are unaware of what a simple dua looks like in a country that has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world is rather alarming. But sadly, incidents of blatant Muslim hate often used to drive a narrative that aims at dividing people are no longer surprising. On the other hand, heartwarming pictures of SRK offering prayers alongside his manager have gone viral for all the right reasons.
