Chinese Scientist Convert Industrial CO₂ Into Protein And The Internet Is Wilding



Are we getting closer to solving a major crisis plaguing the environment for over two centuries now? Human beings are responsible for 50% of the Carbon-di-Oxide that has an adverse impact on the climate courtesy of global warming. While there have been promising studies and research to curb the emissions, none have been deployed at scale. However, this Chinese innovation seems like it should be out there everywhere across the industrialized world. So what’s the buzz? China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has approved a groundbreaking protein made from carbon dioxide as a new animal feed ingredient. Imagine ek teer se do nishaana (killing two birds with a single stone), with the new technological breakthrough.

The technology transforms industrial CO2 waste into valuable nutrition for livestock, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources.

The protein comes from Yarrowia lipolytica yeast, developed by Beijing company GTLB using bio-fermentation technology. The process captures CO2 emissions from coal, natural gas, and steel industries, then converts this waste gas into high-quality yeast protein.

This method is incredibly efficient compared to conventional farming – a single 10-hectare yeast factory can produce 100,000 tonnes of protein annually, matching the output of 40,000 hectares of soybean farms. The yeast protein contains essential amino acids, trace elements, and beneficial compounds that make it highly nutritious for animals.
