Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay is currently making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. After a successful marriage of 27 years, his wife Sankgeetha Sornalingam has filed for divorce, alleging infidelity. According to a report by NDTV, she filed for a divorce in a court in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, as she wants the marriage to be dissolved. For those who don’t know, the news of her filing for divorce comes after reports of the actor being involved in an extramarital affair surfaced on the internet.
Taking a look back at their relationship, their love story began in 1996 when Sankgeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil born and raised in the UK, flew to Chennai in hopes of meeting the actor to congratulate him on the success of his film Poove Unakkaga. Reportedly, impressed with her innocence, he invited her to his house and even introduced her to his parents.

Spanning between 1996 and 1999, Vijay’s parents eventually initiated their marriage proposal. Despite their different religious beliefs, he being a Christian and she being a Hindu, had an interfaith marriage in 1999. The traditional Hindu wedding ceremony took place in Chennai. They went on to have a son, Jason Sanjay, in 2000 and a daughter, Divya Saasha, in 2005.

It was 2023, they speculations surrounding their separation started surfacing on the internet. While the rumours were dismissed, stating that she was on a US vacation with her kids, it was her absence from major Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) political events fuel more speculations around their divorce. It was during the same time that the netizens began discussing his relationship with actress Trisha Krishnan.
According to the media publication, in her divorce petition, Sankgeetha accused Vijay of having an “extramarital relationship (with an actress).” She has sought divorce on those grounds. A recent News18 report has also stated that the actor’s son has unfollowed him on social media, amidst the divorce proceeding.
Entrepreneur and social worker, Sankgeetha Sornalingam, has reportedly sought the right of residence at her matrimonial home and permanent alimony from Thalapathy Vijay. More details on the divorce proceeding are yet to be unveiled.
