ChatGPT Now Handles Over 2.5 Billion Prompts Daily, Reveals OpenAI

OpenAI has reportedly shared new insights into the usage of ChatGPT, revealing that the chatbot now handles more than 2.5 billion prompts every single day. This is the first time the AI company has publicly disclosed the daily volume of messages processed by its servers. The figures highlight the massive scale at which the platform operates and further solidify its place as one of the most widely-used AI tools globally.

According to a report by Axios, more than 330 million of these daily messages originate from users in the United States, while the rest come from around the world. This data offers a clearer picture of the geographical spread of ChatGPT’s user base, showing its strong presence not only in the U.S. but also globally.

The report also mentions that ChatGPT currently boasts over 500 million weekly active users. A significant majority of these users access the platform through its free tier, showcasing the widespread adoption of the tool among everyday users. ChatGPT’s apps continue to perform exceptionally well across mobile platforms, with the Android app topping the “Top Free” chart on the Google Play Store, and the iOS version ranking second in Apple’s App Store free apps list.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is also reportedly scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C. this week to engage in discussions around the future of artificial intelligence. According to sources cited by Axios, Altman aims to emphasize the importance of keeping AI accessible to everyone and not allowing such transformative technology to remain concentrated in the hands of a few. His ongoing message has focused on democratising AI and ensuring that its benefits are widely shared.

The rise of ChatGPT and similar AI platforms appears to be having a noticeable impact on internet behavior. According to additional data, global search traffic saw a year-on-year decline of 15 percent in June 2025. This suggests that as more users turn to AI tools for quick answers and content creation, traditional search engines may be losing traction. Furthermore, the rate of users not clicking through to news websites has increased sharply, from 56 percent in May 2024 to 69 percent in May 2025, hinting at a broader shift in how people access and consume information.

These numbers underscore the changing landscape of digital interaction, with ChatGPT at the forefront of this evolution.
