Apple Targets Spring 2026 For Long-Awaited Siri AI Overhaul

After years of anticipation, Apple is finally aiming to roll out a major Siri upgrade in spring 2026, according to a report from Bloomberg. This long-overdue revamp is expected to be part of the iOS 26.4 release, usually scheduled for March, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

The upgraded version of Siri was first introduced back at WWDC 2023, where it was pitched as a major feature for Apple’s latest iPhones. At the time, the company promised that these AI enhancements would be available soon. But things didn’t go as planned. Behind the scenes, technical complications forced Apple to push the release back multiple times, eventually postponing it indefinitely. Understandably, this left users disappointed and investors questioning Apple’s AI roadmap.

Now, the company is hoping that the next few weeks of development go smoothly. If all goes well, we could get a sneak peek of the new Siri alongside the next iPhone launch in autumn 2025. If that happens, it would mark Siri’s most significant evolution since it first arrived in 2011.

The repeated delays have been a real challenge, especially as competitors like Google and Microsoft continue to push forward in the AI space. In response, Apple has shaken up its internal leadership, moving Siri out from under John Giannandrea’s control and placing it in the hands of Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell, the latter known for leading the development of the Vision Pro.

At the centre of this update is what Apple is calling “LLM Siri”, a completely reimagined assistant powered by large language models (LLMs), similar to what’s behind tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Apple initially tried to merge the new AI with Siri’s older system, but that approach led to too many bugs—nearly a third of the time, things just didn’t work right. So Apple made the bold choice to rebuild Siri from scratch.

Inside Apple, there’s still an ongoing debate: should the company build everything in-house or bring in help from outside? Buying AI start-ups is one option they’re reportedly exploring to speed things up.

Apple’s not alone in this, Meta, for example, recently poured $14 billion into Scale AI, even bringing its CEO, Alexandr Wang, into their AI team. It’s a clear sign that AI development is becoming a top priority across the tech world.

For Apple, this Siri upgrade is more than just a new feature, it’s a chance to prove it can still lead in an AI-first future.
