Rapper Hanumankind was among the artists who took the stage at Coachella in California, USA this year. Infusing a desi flair into his act, he performed hits like Run It Up and Big Dawgs accompanied by a chenda melam (a traditional percussion performance originating from Kerala).
Hanumankind collaborated with Kochuveettil Beats, a group of chenda musicians, to showcase his home state of Kerala at Coachella. Dressed in traditional white attire, the percussion band joined him on stage as he performed his latest track, Run It Up.

A video of Hanumankind performing Big Dawgs, the track that skyrocketed his fame, was shared on an Instagram page. The audience is seen capturing the moment on their phones, singing along, and erupting with excitement during his energetic set. At one point, the rapper pointed his mike at the crowd, inviting them to join in and take over the performance.
For those unfamiliar, the chenda is a cylindrical percussion instrument from Kerala, deeply rooted in the state’s festivals for centuries. Hanumankind’s bold representation of Kerala at Coachella resonated strongly with fans.
On Instagram, one fan remarked, “The world ain’t ready to see what Indian performances have in store.” Another exclaimed, “Woaah. Faayaaah.” A fan wrote in Malayalam, “This is what it is all about! DOPE! ABSOLUTELY DOPE!!!!!!” Another commented, “Boy is born to claim.” The chenda players were thrilled too, with one, Immanuel Sunny, posting, “Ayyyyyyy that’s me!!”
Meanwhile, Hanumankind – a rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor from Kerala – shot to stardom when his 2024 song Big Dawgs with Kalmi became a viral hit. A$AP Rocky even collaborated with him for a remixed version. His newest single, Run It Up, dropped this year. Hanumankind also made his acting debut in the 2024 Malayalam blockbuster Rifle Club.
