College students from Karnataka have been protesting for their right to wear hijab since they were barred from entering the campus of a Government college in Udupi in December 2021. After more institutes banned the hijab, Muslim women joined in the call to condemn the restrictions. More recently, during a High Court hearing over the issue, another protest that supports the ban was held with students wearing saffron shawls and chanting “Jai Shri Ram”. As the clash escalated, an incident where a young man at a college in Shimoga hoisted a saffron flag has come to the light.
Amidst protests over the hijab row in Karnataka, a video of a boy climbing up a pole at a college and hoisting a saffron flag to protest against allowing Muslim students to wear the hijab surfaced online. It is currently doing the rounds of social media.

Many reacted to the video, calling out the act. Many were outraged and alleged that the Indian flag was replaced by a saffron flag. As the video garnered attention, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar shared his reaction to the incident suggestion a week of closer dor “affected institutions”.
However, in a fact check, a police officer on the ground revealed that the flag post was empty before the mob hoisted the saffron flag.

On Tuesday, following the High Court proceedings, the Chief Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj S Bommai announced that all schools and colleges will remain closed for 3 days in a move to curb communal clashes. Read our report on the protests here:
