Alexa asked for a “task to do” to a 10-year-old girl; “Plug a phone charger roughly halfway into a power socket, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs,” the voice assistant said. Needless to say, it hasn’t gone down well. Alexa’s unexpected advice was shared by the girl’s mother on Twitter.
The Alexa challenge was put on Twitter user Kristin Livdahl’s profile earlier this week. Livdahl posted that she and her daughter had been performing some YouTube physical challenges from a PE teacher and that her daughter wanted to do more. This, however, was not the correct type of task. Fortunately, Livdahl was nearby and intervened before Alexa could complete her sentence.
In another tweet, she stated, “I was right there and yelled, ‘No, Alexa, no!’ like it was a dog.” “In any case, my daughter claims she is too smart to do anything like that.” However, just though this possible calamity was averted does not negate the fact that it is extremely hazardous and must be handled.

This “challenge” would force electricity to shoot sparks from the exposed prongs and pennies, perhaps igniting a fire within a home’s walls. Not to mention the potential for instant injury to anybody near the outlet at the moment. Alexa isn’t some evil Amazon employee attempting to get people to touch pennies to electrical sockets. Instead, only when the virtual assistant doesn’t have a pre-programmed response, it defaults to search results. Furthermore, because the internet is full of harmful stuff like this penny challenge, it’s simple for youngsters to engage with their voice assistant and come across results like this one.
Amazon, by its part, swiftly withdrew the result so that no one else was faced with the same problem. Consumer trust is at the heart of all that we do, and Alexa is meant to offer accurate, meaningful, and valuable information to customers, according to an Amazon representative. We took immediate measures to correct the problem as early as we became notified of it.
