WhatsApp is reportedly developing an optional subscription plan that will unlock exclusive features focused on personalisation and productivity, while keeping its core messaging services free for all users. Still under development, the plan is expected to roll out gradually, with details around pricing, availability, and final features yet to be announced, and it is separate from the previously reported ad-free subscription for the Updates tab.

WhatsApp is reportedly testing an optional subscription tier, with a popup message spotted in the Android beta version 2.26.4.8, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo. The feature is still under development and cannot be accessed yet, even after updating to the latest beta through the Google Play Beta Program.
As per the report, the premium subscription is expected to unlock additional personalisation and productivity features. WhatsApp may roll out the plan via a waitlist system, where interested users can sign up and receive a notification once the subscription becomes available, giving them the option to opt in.
Early details suggest the first batch of premium features could include exclusive stickers, new app themes, the ability to pin more than three chats, custom chat ringtones, and options to change the app icon. These additions are aimed at giving users greater control over how WhatsApp looks and feels.
The report adds that WhatsApp may expand the subscription over time based on user feedback, with pricing expected to vary by country. This plan is separate from the ad-free subscription for the Updates tab being developed for Europe and the UK, and WhatsApp has reiterated that core messaging features and privacy protections will remain free, with no timeline yet announced for a public rollout.
