The tensions brewing between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in a war. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in eastern Ukraine. Soon after, explosions could be heard as Russia began its invasion of Ukraine as per multiple reports. The move came as a shock to many as the country had earlier denied plans to invade. Ukraine has declared martial law. Meanwhile, the United Nations and allied countries have been urging Russia to draw back its troops. The situation is grave as a war could mean a devastating loss of lives. In fact, the first casualties have already been reported. Amidst the conflict, the official Twitter account of Ukraine has been posting political memes that capture the terrifying situation. And it’s shitposting at its finest in order to spread awareness of the current situation.

Ukraine from its Twitter handle shared a cartoon of Adolf Hitler looking proudly at President Vladimir Putin with his hand placed in his face – a sharp criticism of Putin’s unprovoked attacks. While posting a political cartoon amidst an actual war seems strange, the account in a follow-up Tweet explained, “This is not a ‘meme’, but our and your reality right now.”

The scary part is that there is no humour to be found in the post as it’s all unfolding while the whole world watches. It also demands reflection on a tragic moment in history when Hitler had invaded the region during World War II.

Dark humour and shitposting memes have been employed by Ukraine before. Earlier in December, the account had shared a meme about the “headache” that living next to Russia is. While headache is a mild term, it points to the horrors of sharing a border with the aggressive Russian government.

The memes arrive amidst ongoing attacks. Footage of explosions and military troops taking over the Ukrainian border are currently doing the rounds of the internet. While the memes have gone viral on Twitter haunting images and videos have also emerged.

Meanwhile, the Twitter account has also demanded that Russia be removed from the social media platform. Here’s the message:
