Twitter’s Iconic Larry The Bird Mascot Worth $34,000 Blown Up In Desert; Internet Asks ‘What’s The Point?’

The 560-pound Twitter sign was blown up in the Nevada desert earlier to promote an online marketplace.

The 12 foot tall logo was a prominent feature sitting atop the Twitter headquarters before being auctioned off. The iconic Larry the Bird logo was bought for $34,000, in March. It marked the end of an era that started with the acquisition of the bird app for $44 billion by Elon Musk in November 2022, which followed a series of upheavals in the venture. The microblogging app was later renamed X on July 23, 2023. The old Twitter logo was also replaced with the X logo.

On May 17, 2024, the domain of the site was also transferred to x(dot)com from twitter(dot)com. The domain x(dot)com was purchased back from Paypal by Elon Musk in 2017 which was his second startup’s defunct domain. No one had a clue as to what the significance of X was for the Tesla billionaire until he revealed his plans to make a super everything app like China’s Wechat. This began by erasing Twitter from the platform with the mark X.

DitchIt, a startup that competes with OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, etc., decided to blow up the iconic bird logo drawing parallels with Musk’s Twitter takeover. The company stated in the video

Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to X to support free expression. We’re doing the same for local marketplaces.

But

“What’s the point?” Among a flurry of reactions, a user asked.
