2021 was a tough year for teachers and students, to say the least. Coming back to in-person learning and navigating the increased demands of learning loss and social emotional needs has taken its toll on everyone. 2021 has also brought major developments and an ongoing global pandemic that have changed the way we think about work and life.

These can provide some interesting insights for education going into 2022, where we need to acknowledge the challenges we still face, but also look for ways to infuse more joy and authenticity into learning.

1. Entering the Metaverse

One thing we’ve been hearing a lot about recently is the metaverse, the idea of an interconnected set of immersive digital environments where people can socialize, work, and learn. While the concept of the metaverse usually conjures up images of virtual reality and wearable technology, it can also include experiences accessible today like social media and online games.

What does this have to do with education? Students today are growing up online, or even in the metaverse in whatever form it exists so far. If schools don’t embrace that technology and way of life, they run the risk of invalidating the world in which students live–and losing students along the way. Instead, we need to meet students where they are, showing them that we value where they spend their time. What does this look like in practice? Edtech doesn’t need to primarily function as a content delivery method, as many learning management systems and cognitive tutors do. It could take the form of esports leagues where students build core skills, or tools for learning about and creating with AI. Letting students choose the technologies and apps they use to learn shows that we trust them and empowers them to be lifelong learners.

UK exporters face key challenges in 2023, SMEs more hit in Q4 2022

UK exporters face significant challenges this year and it will take a concerted effort by the British Chambers of Commerce’s (BCC) global network, working alongside the UK government, to positively shift the dial, the chamber said recently. Most small and medium enterprise (SME) exporters reported no improvement to exports in 2022 last quarter (Q4), latest data shows.

Twenty-seven per cent of exporters reported decreased export sales in Q4 2022 and 47 per cent reported no change. Only 26 per cent of SME exporters saw increased export sales.

UK exporters face significant challenges this year and it will take a concerted effort by the British Chambers of Commerce’s global network, working alongside the UK government, to positively shift the dial, the chamber said recently. Most small and medium enterprise exporters reported no improvement to exports in 2022 last quarter, latest data shows.

The picture for future orders during the quarter was even weaker with 28 per cent reporting a decrease against 24 per cent an increase.

UK exports increased by 6.7 per cent last year once the effect of inflation was removed, but this is still less than the value of goods and services the UK sold overseas in 2018.

In 2022 last quarter, UK exports fell by 2.9 per cent as economic headwinds continued to blow, the chamber said in a press release.

If consumer spending does pick up in China, and beyond, then there could be the potential for higher UK export sales carrying on into 2024.

But the outlook remains uncertain, and the UK Government must fight the corner of small and medium sized export firms.

Issues on customs processes and checks arising from the Northern Ireland Protocol require speedy, stable, and certain resolution, as it still looms over the UK’s relationship with both the European Union and the United States, the chamber said.

Progress on free trade talks with the United States is stalled, meaning that other, innovative ways to improve trade relations will be needed, it noted.

“We must also do all we can to prevent an overly protectionist mindset taking hold in our major trading partner economies. The commitments made in our trade agreements on level playing fields and open, transparent subsidy systems and controls need to be implemented in their spirit as well as in their words,” the chamber said.

The UK government must also finally grasp the nettle and look at changes to the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU, to make exports more competitive, and with lower compliance costs and red tape burdens, it added.

Polish footballer Robert Lewandowski on Saturday backed the Polish FA’s decision to not play their 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off with Russia in Moscow on March 24. The winners of Poland vs Russia are due to play Sweden or Czech Republic for a place in the finals. Cezary Kulesz, the president of the Polish football federation said on Twitter: “No more words, it’s time to act. Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.”

To which Poland men’s football team captain replied: “It is the right decision! I can’t imagine playing a match with the Russian National Team in a situation when armed aggression in Ukraine continues. Russian footballers and fans are not responsible for this, but we can’t pretend that nothing is happening.”

On Friday, the Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) urged all International Sports Federations to relocate or cancel their sports events currently planned in Russia or Belarus.

IOC said that they should take the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian and Belarussian governments into account and give the safety and security of the athletes an absolute priority. The IOC itself has no events planned in Russia or Belarus.

UEFA has already shifted the men’s Champions League final venue from Russia to France and Formula 1 cancelled the Russian Grand Prix amid the Ukraine crisis.

60% US consumers prefer BNPL with existing credit cards: Splitit

Over 60 per cent of consumers in the US would prefer to use a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) option with existing credit cards versus opening new lines of credit, according to a recent report by Splitit indicating a closer correlation between credit cards and BNPL. Most consumers prefer making monthly over bi-weekly payments and prefer longer terms, especially for larger purchases.

The survey, ‘US Consumer Perspectives: Credit Cards and Buy Now Pay Later’ found most respondents (56 per cent) would prefer to make instalment payments monthly instead of every two weeks (25 per cent). The number increases the larger the purchase amount, with 70 per cent preferring monthly payments on purchases of $500 or more. Consumers also clearly prefer options in the number of payment installments. While 60 per cent of those surveyed are fine with four or fewer payments for purchases under $300, 66 per cent favour more than four payments for a $500 purchase, and 75 per cent want more than four on purchases of $1,000 or higher.

As shoppers think ahead to making larger purchases and considering using a BNPL or installment plan on purchases over $1,000 in the year ahead, several categories stand out to make gains. Nearly two-thirds would make purchases on home improvement (66 per cent) or home furnishings (63 per cent). Beyond the home, other top categories are healthcare expenses not covered by insurance (62 per cent), automotive accessories and repair (61 per cent), travel (56 per cent) and jewelry (51 per cent), Splitit said in a press release.

Data revealed by Splitit has indicated a closer correlation between credit cards and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) as 60 per cent of consumers would prefer to use a BNPL option with existing credit cards versus opening new lines of credit. Most consumers prefer making monthly over bi-weekly payments and prefer longer terms, especially for larger purchases.

As the market’s only credit-card-based installment payment solution, Splitit enables consumers to spend smarter and better using the balance on their existing credit cards to pay for higher-ticket purchases over time without new financing, interest or fees. The company attracts higher-value shoppers willing to spend more using the flexible platform. In fact, the survey shows 60 per cent of consumers would spend more with a merchant or upgrade their purchase if they could pay over time.

“Despite the discussions around the decline in credit card use, we’re continuing to see continued growth on our platform, including many key categories around the home, fitness and sporting goods, jewelry and luxury,” said John Harper, Splitit’s interim CEO. “From what we’re seeing so far in the past few months, 2022 will continue to be a year where people will be spending on their home and themselves. I also expect spending to shift eventually as more people are heading back to work as people upgrade their wardrobe and accessories.”

Interestingly, the survey found 83 per cent of respondents feel credit card perks – such as cash back, points or miles – were important, and 48 per cent say it’s the primary reason for using their credit cards. Because consumers who choose to pay in installments with Splitit are still using their credit cards, they continue to receive the same points or miles that they typically earn with that card.

In other findings, the survey discovered 83 per cent are happy with their credit cards, and 71 per cent see credit cards as part of a healthy approach to personal finances. Also, 69 per cent would use their cards more often if they had a lower interest rate, and 63 per cent would likely use their cards if they could pay in smaller, interest-free instalments.

Yes, the big caveat here is that this emission-free machine from the former Citroën luxury vehicle sub-brand is just a concept. Still, DS Automobiles is living up to its commitment of eventually manufacturing only hybrid and electric powertrains.

The DS E-Tense Performance is a remarkable attempt to repackage Formula E racing technology into a street-legal platform.

Beneath the sexy and sporty exterior are a pair of electric motors sourced from the DS Techeetah. Also, each axle gets one and power comes from a battery pack wrapped with a carbon-aluminum composite.

DS Automobiles positions this close to the rear. Given batteries are usually the heavier components that go into EVs, optimal weight distribution is crucial. To compensative for the heft, the DS E-Tense Performance also features a carbon monocoque.

Its electric powertrain generates 805 horsepower to push the supercar from a standstill to 62 mph in just 2.0 seconds. This matches the aggressive low-slung styling of its body.

The sleek coupe gets a two-tone coat of black and green. We can describe the latter shade as iridescent given the color shifts depending on the viewing angle.
