JW Marriott Debuts in Tokyo’s Takanawa Gateway City


JW Marriott has officially arrived in Tokyo, marking a major milestone for the luxury brand’s growth in Japan. The new JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo opened this week in the city’s futuristic Takanawa Gateway City district—positioned directly above Takanawa Gateway Station and just 20 minutes from Haneda Airport. The debut marks the second JW Marriott property in Japan and the first to introduce the brand’s new “Mindful Rooms & Suites” concept to Asia.

Design Rooted in Tranquility

Designed by international studio Yabu Pushelberg, the 200-room property takes inspiration from Zen philosophy and the natural beauty of Takanawa. Abstract Japanese artworks and a mirrored Mount Fuji installation greet guests on the ground floor, while the 30th-floor reception offers sweeping views of the Tokyo Bay horizon and Gotenyama Hill.

The design story continues throughout the hotel, where neutral tones, natural materials, and large windows create a sense of calm amid the city’s bustle. The “Tree House”—a glowing centerpiece of the lobby crafted in collaboration with Czech glassmaker Lasvit—symbolizes the brand’s connection to nature and mindfulness.

The hotel’s Mindful Rooms and Suites, set to launch in December, take the concept further with design details that encourage rest, reflection, and serenity.

Culinary Journeys Led by Global Talent

Culinary Director Conrado Tromp leads a robust dining lineup designed to showcase both Japanese tradition and international creativity. At Kakō, diners can experience washoku cuisine with sake from all 46 prefectures, while the JW Garden provides herbs and botanicals used in dishes and cocktails throughout the property.

Other highlights include Saki, an eight-seat kappo restaurant born from a collaboration between two-Michelin-starred chefs Kazumine Nishida (Shoukouwa) and Emmanuel Stroobant (Saint Pierre), and Sefino, a Mediterranean restaurant in partnership with one-Michelin-starred Chef Agustin Balbi (Andō). For casual indulgence, Le Cres offers Japanese-inspired croissants, while the JW Bar serves cocktails and champagne with panoramic skyline views.

Elevated Wellness and Events

On the 28th floor, Spa by JW combines Japanese wellness rituals with modern treatments. The serene pool area features a quarry-style stone design and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Tokyo Tower.

The property also offers over 11,840 square feet of meeting and event space, including Japan’s largest ballroom with 270-degree movable LED walls and state-of-the-art audiovisual technology.

For families, the hotel’s Family by JW program introduces young guests to Tokyo with interactive booklets, origami, and JW-branded gifts.
