Both sides feel the visit by India’s chief negotiator Darpan Jain and his team should be rescheduled until the latest developments and their implications have been evaluated, India media outlets reported citing unnamed commerce department officials.
India’s negotiating team for the India-US trade deal, scheduled to visit Washington between February 23 and 25, has reportedly postponed its visit following the US Supreme Court’s ruling last week invalidating the reciprocal tariffs imposed on partner nations by President Donald Trump.
Both sides feel the rescheduling was needed until the latest developments and their implications have been evaluated.
While exporters are confident of absorbing the 15-per cent global tariffs imposed by Trump as long as no new tariffs are implemented, experts feel India should now pause negotiations or carefully recalibrate its position in light of the apex court ruling.
Indian experts are of the opinion that New Delhi should not accept the deal in the present form as it places tough conditions on the country and things have now changed on the tariff front following the court ruling.
The legal analysis of US actions is under way in India along with the possible impact on trade and strategic ties.
