Musk reiterated ideas he has shared before, including an October post where he said, “Working will be optional in the future. There will be universal high income.” Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, DC, alongside Huang and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Eng. Abdullah Amer Alswaha, Musk added, “Currency becomes irrelevant. There will still be constraints like electricity and mass, but money will stop being relevant.”

He said he expects this shift within the next “10, 20 years,” predicting that the transition will be well underway in the next two decades. With robots handling the majority of labour, Musk said, “work will be optional like growing your own food instead of buying it,” adding that people will choose employment based on passion rather than necessity. “It’ll be like playing sports or a video game,” he said, describing future work as an activity people do for enjoyment rather than survival.
Musk also said AI and robotics will “eliminate poverty” by reducing the cost of basic goods and services to near zero. “There’s been a lot of talk and many NGOs have tried to address poverty but have not succeeded… AI and humanoid robots will actually eliminate poverty,” he said. While Tesla may pioneer the field, Musk emphasized that “many other companies will build humanoid robots,” adding, “There is only one way to make everyone wealthy, and that is AI and robotics.”
