After Tejaswin Shankar‘s historic bronze win in the men’s high jump event, senior squash player Saurav Ghosal went on to create history by winning India’s first ever singles medal in squash. While Ghosal defeated former World No 1 James Willstrop (of England) to earn the bronze medal, India’s total tally of medals now stands at 15 in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
While the internet is flooded with congratulatory messages for Ghosal for his phenomenal performance and achievement in Birmingham, a video of him breaking down into tears after defeating his arch-rival Willstrop in the men’s single squash event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 has gone viral on the internet. Meanwhile, talking about his historic achievement, Ghosal told India Today, “I’m very very happy. It’s a historic day for Indian squash. To be able to do this on a stage like this against a player of the ilk of James Willstrop is very very special. I’m just so happy that after all these years I have managed to kind of pull through and win this medal. So I’m ecstatic.”
PM Narendra Modi also praised Ghosal’s win at the Commonwealth Games 2022. “It is a delight to see @SauravGhosal scaling new heights of success. The Bronze medal he’s won in Birmingham is a very special one. Congratulations to him. May his achievements help boost the popularity of squash among India’s youth,” Modi tweeted.
