Bengaluru Man Dies By Suicide After Losing Rs 11 Lakh To Digital Arrest Scam

Kumara K, a 48-year-old BESCOM (Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company) employee, died by suicide on Tuesday after reportedly losing Rs 11 lakh to a digital arrest scam.

A native of Kelagere village of Ramanagara district, the man was a resident of HSR layout. He was married with an eight-year-old son. The cyber fraud victim was found dead in his native village. A suicide note was recovered from the pocket of the deceased.

Probe revealed that two weeks back, Kumara received a call from a person posing as Vikram Goswami, a CBI official. The scammer threatened the BESCOM employee with the usual tactics of getting charged and arrested on fraud charges of money laundering, smuggling contraband, and such.

The man initially wired Rs 1.95 lakh and subsequently transferred nearly Rs 11 lakh to various accounts of the cyber crook. The fake CBI official threatened Kumara with house arrest and continued surveillance. The digital arrest scamster asked for an additional Rs 2.75 lakh.

Kumara’s wife stated that her husband had been speaking with someone in Hindi for 15 days and on July 14 he left home for his hometown.
