Artemis II: Fuel Test Underway As NASA Begins Second Wet Dress Rehearsal Ahead Of Lunar Launch [WATCH LIVE]

After the fuel test fiasco during the first wet dress rehearsal of the SLS rocket, the second test is underway at press. The second wet dress rehearsal countdown commenced on February 17, with a fuel test scheduled today on February 19. Per NASA after the launch director’s go, the crew will be loading the SLS tank with fuel. But before that we make the tanks chill. NASA updated

Teams have started chilling down the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen lines for the SLS rocket’s core stage. This critical step cools the propellant lines ahead of loading super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the core stage tank, which will eventually hold more than 700,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

The premier space agency explained the significance of the chilling down process

The chilldown process ensures the hardware is conditioned for the extreme temperatures of cryogenic propellants, reducing thermal shock and safeguarding system integrity. Once complete, teams will transition to slow fill of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, followed by a fast fill later in the countdown.

Ahead of the process, technicians fill the SLS with nitrogen, an inert gas that mitigates any fire hazards. Per NASA

The step also includes an inerting purge that removes oxygen and prevents contaminants like moisture or particulates from entering sensitive systems on the rocket. This keeps propulsion and life-support hardware clean and stable and creates a non-reactive environment that protects hardware and minimizes chemical reactions during countdown and ascent.
