India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, one of the standout performers in the Women’s World Cup 2025, is set to receive a rare and prestigious honour in her hometown of Siliguri. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that a new cricket stadium will be built in her name, a tribute to the 22-year-old’s pivotal role in helping India lift their maiden Women’s World Cup trophy earlier this year.

‘Richa Cricket Stadium’ to Be Built in Siliguri
According to Banerjee, the “Richa Cricket Stadium” will be constructed on a 27-acre plot at Chandmani Tea Estate in North Bengal. The Chief Minister said the project is aimed at honouring Ghosh’s achievements while also promoting sports and inspiring more young girls from the region to take up cricket.
“This is a way to honour Richa, one of Bengal’s shining sports talents, and also encourage more young cricketers from North Bengal,” Banerjee told reporters in Siliguri. The project will soon be undertaken by the state government, she added.

Celebrating a Champion’s Journey
Richa Ghosh played a crucial role in India’s World Cup-winning campaign, scoring 235 runs across eight matches at an average of 39.16. Her late-innings heroics proved decisive in multiple matches, including the final against South Africa, where she scored a quickfire 34 off 24 balls with three fours and two sixes. Her contribution helped India set a formidable total of 298 for 7, before bowling out South Africa for 246 to clinch their historic first title.
Recognising her contribution, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) awarded Ghosh Rs 34 lakh, Rs 1 lakh for every run she scored in the final. She was also conferred with the ‘Banga Bhushan’ award, appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the West Bengal government, and presented with a gold chain.
A Moment of Pride for Bengal Cricket
Former BCCI President and CAB Chief Sourav Ganguly lauded Ghosh’s composure under pressure, saying her ability to score crucial runs in limited opportunities reflected her maturity and talent. Veteran cricketer Jhulan Goswami, who played a key role in developing women’s cricket in Bengal, recalled discovering Ghosh during district trials in Siliguri in 2013, a programme she had initiated after India missed the Super Six in that year’s World Cup.

The Banga Bhushan and Banga Bibhushan awards are among West Bengal’s highest civilian honours, given to individuals who excel in fields like art, literature, culture, and sports. With a stadium now set to bear her name, Richa Ghosh joins the ranks of Bengal’s most celebrated athletes, a symbol of determination, excellence, and inspiration for the next generation.
