Adnan Sami Recalls Why He Couldn’t Attend Mother’s Funeral In Pakistan: ‘Indian Govt Was Understanding Par…’

One of the most adored and loved musicians of India, Adnan Sami, has made a name for himself in the music industry with his iconic songs. Having been a Pakistani citizen earlier, he became an Indian citizen a few years back. Despite everything, he still faces backlash from Pakistani netizens for openly discussing his living conditions there. Now, during a recent interaction with India TV, he recalled how the government there has denied him a visa to attend his mother’s funeral in 2024.

For those who don’t know, Sami’s mother, Begum Naureen, breathed her last in 2024 unexpectedly. Her untimely demise came as a shock to everyone since she had no prior health concerns. The news left him devastated, and he reached out to the authorities of both the neighbouring countries, India and Pakistan, to request their permission to travel and attend her last rites.

He went on to reveal that even though he had gotten the permission from the Indian government, the Pakistani government rejected his visa. Quoted by News18, he recalled the incident, “The Indian government was very understanding. Maine yaha ki sarkaar se pucha main jana chahta hu toh apko koi objection to nahi. Unhone kaha, ‘Zahir hai, aapki maa ka inteqal hua hai, aapko zaroor jana chahiye’. Unki taraf se koi problem nahi tha.”

The 53-year-old musician was hence forced to watch his mother’s last rites on WhatsApp. “Maine visa ke liye apply kiya, par unhone refuse kar diya. Maine kaha, ‘Meri maa ka inteqal hua hai’. Phir bhi unhone mana kar diya. Main nahi ja saka. Maine unka poora janaza WhatsApp ke video pe dekha.”

Born to a Pakistani Air Force pilot and diplomat in London, Adnan Sami was granted Indian citizenship in December 2015 after his Pakistani passport, which was issued in May 2010, expired in May 2015. His passport wasn’t renewed by the Pakistani government, which led to him approaching the Indian government and requesting them to legalize his stay in India on humanitarian grounds.
