A group of workers dismantling the pedestal of a statue of a Confederate general in the U.S. found a ‘time capsule’ which they believed to be buried more than a century ago. However, this ain’t the first time that a ‘time capsule’ has been unearthed from the location as a relatively small-box was discovered on December 17 and on further investigation by conservators they just found three water-logged books, a coin and a photograph covered in an envelope in it. While the contents of the box didn’t match the description of relics published in an 1887 newspaper article, experts believe the newly-founded box to be the one mentioned in the article. According to reports that article talked about a time capsule concealed in the base of General Robert E. Lee’s statue. And it also emphasised on the relics hidden in the box: bullets, maps, coins and other items, which experts believe to be stored in the recently-found box.
Confirming the news, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam shared a couple of pictures of the time capsule and wrote, “They found it! This is likely the time capsule everyone was looking for. Conservators studying it—stay tuned for next steps! (Won’t be opened today).”

A couple of hours later, he shared another tweet, confirming that experts have X-rayed the box and believe it to contain coins and ammunitions from the Civil War. Northam tweeted, “X-rays give a first look inside the time capsule: Experts believe there may be coins, books, buttons, and even ammunition from the Civil War. The box will be opened tomorrow at 1:00 PM!”

The recently-found box aka ‘time capsule’ is reported to be twice the size of the one found earlier this month. Meanwhile, General Robert E. Lee’s statue in Richmond, Virginia City, was taken down in September.
