WhatsApp Is Reportedly Testing An Option To Mute ‘Everyone’ Mentions: How It Will Work

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new Android feature that gives users more control over group chats by allowing them to mute ‘everyone’ mentions. According to a feature tracker, this upcoming tool is designed to reduce the annoyance of frequent or unnecessary alerts, adding a layer of personalisation to how group conversations are managed.

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature spotted in Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo. The update is compatible with the current beta release and indicates that the Meta-owned messaging app is preparing to expand user controls for group chats in an upcoming version.

A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo reveals a new “Mute @everyone” option located under the existing mute toggle in the notifications settings of WhatsApp for Android. The option is turned off by default, meaning users will need to manually enable it if they wish to stop receiving alerts from everyone mentions.

This feature is seen as a counterbalance to the existing “@everyone” tool, which lets both admins and group participants send a notification to all members at once. While useful in some scenarios, it has raised concerns about misuse and spam-like disruptions, prompting WhatsApp to design a way for users to avoid these unnecessary alerts.

Once available, the feature will let users suppress notifications triggered by “@everyone” mentions, even when group chats are muted. At the same time, WhatsApp will allow flexibility by giving users the option to still receive these alerts if they prefer, through customizable notification settings.

Currently, the mute everyone mentions option is in development and hasn’t yet been rolled out to beta testers registered on the Google Play Beta programme. Reports suggest it may become available for testing in the coming weeks before being officially released in a future WhatsApp update.
