Trump Nominates Jared Isaacman To Replace Sean Duffy As NASA Chief Amid 3I/ATLAS Buzz And Mission Moon

The American space program is at the cusp of making history again with its lunar program Artemis. Already behind schedule, NASA plans to send fresh pairs of boots to Earth’s only natural satellite since the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. The Soviets were left behind but a new challenge breathes down the neck of the eagle—a dragon whose time has (probably) come! With China expediting its lunar mission, NASA is burning the midnight oil to get back to the Moon. SpaceX, its private partner, run by Elon Musk, has been readying Starship for a couple years now with moderate success. The delay led to Sean Duffy announcing a bid to reopen the contracts for more private players, triggering Musk, and eventually his departure now as the interim administrator of NASA. President Trump in his latest announced the renomination of private astronomer and billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman to lead the space agency. He remarked,

Sean Duffy has done an incredible job as Interim Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This evening, I am pleased to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot, and astronaut, as Administrator of NASA.

Jared’s passion for space, astronaut experience, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new space economy, make him ideally suited to lead NASA into a bold new era.

Responding to the post, Isaacman stated in a long-form tweet

Thank you, Mr. President @POTUS, for this opportunity. It will be an honor to serve my country under your leadership. I am also very grateful to @SecDuffy, who skillfully oversees @NASA alongside his many other responsibilities.

He added,

The support from the space-loving community has been overwhelming. I am not sure how I earned the trust of so many, but I will do everything I can to live up to those expectations.

To the innovators building the orbital economy, to the scientists pursuing breakthrough discoveries and to dreamers across the world eager for a return to the Moon and the grand journey beyond—these are the most exciting times since the dawn of the space age– and I truly believe the future we have all been waiting for will soon become reality.

And to the best and brightest at NASA, and to all the commercial and international partners, we have an extraordinary responsibility—but the clock is running. The journey is never easy, but it is time to inspire the world once again to achieve the near-impossible—to undertake and accomplish big, bold endeavors in space…and when we do, we will make life better here at home and challenge the next generation to go even further.

NASA will never be a caretaker of history—but will forever make history.

Godspeed, President Donald J. Trump, and Godspeed NASA, as America leads the greatest adventure in human history

Meanwhile Duffy thanked Trump and congratulated Isaacman. He further reiterated his stance on the space race,

We’ve made giant leaps in our mission to return to the Moon before China. It’s critical for our national security and national pride that we win the next space race.

Elon Musk tweeted his ringing endorsement for Isaacman, with whom he had a long-term association.

Jared Isaacman, the founder and executive chairman of Shift4, was the commander of Inspiration4, the world’s first all-civilian mission to space launched by SpaceX. His several world records include two speed-around-the-world flights in 2008 and 2009, raising funds for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. He also established Draken International in 2011 to train pilots for the air forces of the USA, Britain, and NATO. In September 2024, Jared led the Polaris Dawn mission via SpaceX and became the first private citizen to perform a spacewalk.
