Indian uncle humour is a whole category of humour that isn’t just unfunny but also embarrassing. And yet, uncles – mostly middle-aged men, manage to show up with their problematic jokes. In the most recent incident of unfunny jokes, Sourav Ganguly was quoted saying “There is no stress in life. Only wife and girlfriend give stress”. How original! The cricketer reportedly made the troubling statement quite casually when he was asked what stresses him out in life. While the joke is far from being hilarious, the story behind how the internet found out sure is.
Sourav Ganguly’s words surfaced in the form of a pull quote in a Tweet posted by a cricket news website called Circle of Cricket. So not only was he quoted for the awful comment but someone thoughts it was a good idea to share it as a funny post captioned “Who agrees with Dada?”. Firstly, we hope nobody agrees and secondly, nobody knows why it was a news update in the first place.
As soon as the Tweet surfaced on social media, netizens got down to the business of schooling him for the unwarranted, casual sexism. “Men still laugh at these?” asked one user in disgust. Check out the Tweet here:
