Team India’s middle-order mainstay and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has reportedly been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Sydney after suffering a near-fatal internal injury during the third ODI against Australia. While his condition has stabilised, medical officials describe it as “delicate,” with the 30-year-old expected to remain under observation for several days.
How the incident unfolded
The frightening episode occurred during Saturday’s match in Sydney, when Iyer sprinted backward to take a high catch near the boundary. He fell heavily on his left side, clutching his rib cage immediately after impact. Initial scans revealed trauma in the abdominal region, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
A catch to remember, courage to admire. 🫡

Subsequent tests reportedly showed signs of a splenic laceration and internal bleeding, prompting his admission to the ICU for close monitoring. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer received immediate medical attention and was in the care of a specialised team.
Moved out of ICU, but recovery still cautious
After nearly 48 hours of intensive care, doctors decided to move Iyer to a high-dependency ward on Monday morning. His vitals have stabilised, but he continues to be classified as “delicate” due to the sensitive nature of his internal injury.

Hospital sources indicate that he will undergo additional imaging and rest for several days before any decision is made regarding travel or discharge. For now, his treatment focus remains on preventing complications and ensuring gradual healing.
Impact on India’s campaign
Iyer’s absence could prove significant for India’s ongoing tour and future fixtures. The right-hander has been a central figure in India’s middle order, offering stability and leadership under pressure. As the team prepares for its upcoming series and next year’s ICC calendar, his recovery timeline could affect squad planning.
A BCCI official familiar with the situation said the management will prioritise Iyer’s long-term health over match availability.
Support and messages pour in
Since the incident, wishes have flooded social media from teammates, former cricketers, and fans across the world. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya reportedly reached out privately to check on his progress, while #GetWellSoonShreyas trended online through Sunday night.
Although Iyer’s removal from ICU is an encouraging sign, full recovery from a spleen-related injury can take several weeks. For now, both medical experts and the Indian camp are relieved that the worst appears to have passed, but the next phase of his rehabilitation will determine when he can safely return to the field.
