‘Ranbir Kapoor Stopped Experimenting Because Of Me’: Anurag Kashyap Feels ‘Responsible’ For Bombay Velvet’s Failure

Having made his Hindi film debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Saawariya, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor has made a name for himself with his versatile performances. He has headlined many different films, never shying away from experimenting with genres, his looks, and even his characters. Despite facing ups and downs, he never stopped bringing good films to the audience. As he gears up for the release of his upcoming film Ramayana, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has stated that the actor lost “confidence” to “experiment” after the box office failure of Bombay Velvet (2015).

Still considered as Bollywood’s infamous big-budget disappointments, Kashyap never shies away from talking about what went wrong with the project. Speaking on the aftermath of Bombay Velvet’s failure, he admitted that he let the movie’s massive budget overwhelm his creative instincts. Talking to Galatta Plus, he expressed that the movie should have been made the way it was “researched.”

Quoted by News18, the Gangs of Wasseypur filmmaker added, “I did it the way it was budgeted. I also bought into all the bullshit that everybody threw at me. They told me, ‘When you can make such an amazing film with nobody in it, imagine what would happen if we get stars and big money?’ And we also saw what happened.”

Kashyap stated that the film’s scale worked against its vision. While he heaped praises on Kapoor and called him a committed actor, who always experiments with his roles despite being a mainstream actor, he also revealed that he felt responsible for Kapoor not experimenting with his roles anymore. He said, “Ranbir Kapoor commits a lot and that’s the one thing I feel responsible for because he has stopped experimenting.”

Recalling how Ranbir faced a period of uncertainty after back-to-back failures with Bombay Velvet, Besharam (2013), and Jagga Jasoos (2017), he said, “After that, he was unsure for a time period. But his commitment is amazing.” “Ranbir doesn’t do wrong, but it’s the director’s fault. Everybody comes together to make a good film; directors make bad films,” Anurag Kashyap concluded.

On the work front, Ranbir Kapoor is currently busy with Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. While he will be essaying the role of Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi will play Sita. The movie also reportedly stars Sunny Deol, Arun Govil, Kajal Aggarwal, Yash, Vijay Sethupathi, and others in pivotal roles. He also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal Park, a sequel to Animal, and Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra franchise in his pipeline.
