While we already are at the brink of the next great war, is this also the year of the great Soda War? Seems likely as soft drink maker Pepsico took a cheeky dig at rival Coca Cola in its latest Super Bowl XL commercial. Pepsi’s brand new ad dubbed “The Choice” features a polar bear, a familiar character from the house of Coke.
The advertisement begins with the polar bear taking a blindfold drink test of the only two contenders available. The result baffles the creature as it discovers the beverage of choice happened to be the competitors brand. The trauma sends him for therapy as he drowns in an identity crisis. The ad features Taika Waititi, the ad’s director as the therapist himself. The 50-year-old New Zealand filmmaker and actor is known for Boy (2010), Jojo Rabbit (2019), Free Guy (2021), Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love & Thunder (2022) among other movies.
The advertisement is not the first Super Bowl ad by the Academy awardee director. Last year he directed three different ads for the sporting spectacle. As cited by Fast Company, Taikia states, “Selfishly, I’ve used the world of making commercials as my filmmaking gym,”
Without giving away much of the content, here;s the ad for your chuckling pleasure:
Meanwhile here’s how the internet is reacting to the new soda war:
One user showered praise: “Goat for not using AI!,: while another asked, “So is he a bi-polar bear now?”
