Here’s what happened. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) successfully extracted a message that was deleted on the Signal app. The messaging app is considered to be one of the most secure in the world. So how did the agency recover an allegedly deleted text? From the suspect’s iPhone notification storage! This is not even the craziest part of the scoop. For the unversed, an iPhone’s notification storage stores the notification up to one month at a stretch. While it can be turned off, most users are oblivious. Reacting to the report, Telegram’s billionaire co-founder and boss Pavel Durov hailed the ‘secret chat’ feature of the app as the most secure. He stated
That’s why Telegram Secret Chats never show message content in push notifications. Since 2013, Secret Chats have remained the most secure and usable way to communicate. US gov funded Signal has too many questionable dependencies on other US companies (AWS, MS, Intel SGX…)
In further tweet, he added,
Turning off notification previews won’t remove the risk — you never know whether the people you message have done the same. Telegram’s Secret Chats design is the only solution. Disabling previews hurts usability, hence two types of chats: Secret and Cloud

Secret Chat in Telegram allows users to add a timer and self-destruct the message and since it is end-to-end encrypted, the text will only be visible on the device it was created on. Logging in from another device with the same account won’t compromise the sanctity of the message.
Meanwhile on the Signal app you can just disable the notification content by choosing “No Name or Content.” While there still be floating popups but the system won’t actually show the content. Users will have to open the app to see the message.
