Nigerian-British Boxer Anthony Joshua Injured in Nigeria Car Crash; Two Dead, Police Confirm

Former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua narrowly avoided tragedy in Nigeria after being involved in a devastating road accident that left two people dead. The incident occurred late Monday morning on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, an area closely connected to Joshua’s Nigerian roots.

Authorities confirmed that Joshua was a passenger in the back seat of a Lexus SUV when the vehicle lost control and crashed into a stationary truck parked along the roadside. The collision, which happened at approximately 11 a.m. local time, is currently under detailed investigation by the Ogun State Police Command.

Police officials revealed that a sudden tyre burst is believed to have caused the driver to lose control before the SUV veered into the stationary vehicle. The impact resulted in the deaths of two other passengers, while Joshua sustained only minor injuries. He was immediately taken to a specialist hospital in Lagos, where government officials later confirmed that the boxer is stable and receiving treatment.

“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua was involved in an accident under circumstances still being reviewed. He sustained minor injuries and is undergoing medical care,” the police statement read, adding that further updates will be released once the investigation progresses. Authorities have not yet clarified whether the fatalities were occupants of Joshua’s vehicle or individuals linked to the parked truck.

The incident comes just days after Joshua’s high-profile victory in Miami, where he secured a commanding sixth-round knockout win over Jake Paul, marking his 29th professional victory in 33 fights. The triumph reignited discussions about a potential blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury, who remains in retirement but continues to be linked to a 2026 comeback.

News of the crash quickly spread across Nigeria and the global boxing community, sparking concern but also relief that Joshua’s injuries were not severe. Jake Paul also took to social media to wish Joshua well, extending support despite their recent rivalry inside the ring.

The crash has once again drawn attention to safety concerns on major Nigerian highways, where tyre failures, speeding, and poorly parked vehicles frequently contribute to fatal incidents.

For now, the focus remains on Joshua’s recovery and the families of the two victims who tragically lost their lives. Police have assured the public that a comprehensive review of the accident is underway, with more clarity expected in the coming days.

Despite the frightening ordeal, Joshua is expected to make a full recovery, though the emotional impact of the incident will likely linger long beyond his physical healing.
