Netizens Demand ‘New Season Of FIR Instead’ As Reports Say Kunal Kemmu To Lead B99’s Indian Adaptation



One of the most popular American sitcom shows, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is all set ti get an Indian adaptation. Yes, you read that right! A new report by Peeping Moon suggests that Netflix India is gearing up to reimagine the popular comedy series for the Indian audience. Set around odd detectives in the 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the show ran for eight seasons, having started in 2013 and ended in 2021.

Well, the entertainment portal in the report added that the makers have approached actor and director Kunal Kemmu to essay the role of Detective Jake Peralta, which was originally played by Andy Samberg. Rishab Seth of Rishta.com and Dhoom Dhaam fame will be directing the Indian adaptation of the NBC/Fox series. The comedy series will reportedly be written by Aarsh Vora. Production of the Netflix series is scheduled to commence in October 2025.

As soon as the news went viral on Reddit, fans rushed to the comment section of the post to express their disbelief over it. The screenshots of the news were posted on the subreddit Bolly Blinds N Gossip with the caption, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine getting an Indian adaptation with Kunal Kemmu.”

Taking to the comment section, fans expressed their disappointment and questioned why the filmmaker never understood that they can’t remake classic sitcoms. Many shared examples of failed remakes, like Friends and The Office. Some even demanded that the makers revive FIR instead of adapting the show. Many even wondered how the show would incorporate the pro LGBT plot.

One wrote, “Why why why. They’re gonna ruin it. Plus B99 is LGBT pro how are they going to incorporate that. All in all a bad idea.” Another wrote, “They tried it with Friends and failed. Do they not learn?” One said, “Please make a new season of FIR instead. Get chandramukhi and gopi back.” Another said, “The humor of Brooklyn 99 can’t be replicated. It’s always bad idea to remake a cult show.”

The yet-to-be-titled series is being produced by Deepak Dhar’s Banijay Asia, which has adapted many other international shows for Netflix India like Call My Agent, The Night Manager, The Good Wife, and The Trial. It is to be noted that while the 42-year-old actor has been finalised by the makers to play Jake’s role, other characters are yet to be cast.

The report states that the Madgaon Express director will begin shooting for the project after he finishes shooting for his upcoming Netflix series, Single Papa. The Shashank Khaitan directorial is a slice-of-life entertainer revolving around single parenthood. He also has Raj & DK’s Prime Video show, Gulkanda Tales, along with Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 5 in his pipeline. If reports are to be believed, he will also start working on his next directorial film.

For those who don’t know, Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Terry Crews, Chelsea Peretti, and Andre Braugher in important roles.
