Mohanlal Fan Is Upset With Negative Portrayal Of Hindus In L2 Empuraan: ‘This Is Betrayal’

The second installment of Mohanlal starrer Lucifer, L2: Empuraan has finally released on the big screens for everyone to enjoy. The Malayalam actioner also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, who had directed both the films. It has managed to break box-office records on day one itself, with an approx collection of Rs 22 crore. The release of the film has, however, left the internet divided, as it has received mixed reactions from the critics as well as the audiences. A Mohanlal fan took to his social media handle and slammed the makers as well as the actor for negatively portraying Hindus in the film.

For those who don’t know, the first 15 mins of the film showcase communal riots of 2002, which had happened in Gujarat. Captioning his tweet as “The Day My Heart Broke at the Theatre,” he expressed how he always called himself a hardcore Mohanlal fan. “Not just a fan an admirer, a worshipper of his art, his screen presence, his humility. His films have been my escape, my joy, and my pride as a Malayali and as a Hindu,” he wrote.

“So naturally, March 27th was a date I had circled in my heart. The day Empuraan would hit the theatres. I walked into the hall with excitement coursing through my veins like every other time a Mohanlal film released. The lights dimmed. The familiar rush of anticipation filled the air. I leaned back in my seat, ready to be enthralled. But what followed in the next fifteen minutes shattered me,” he added.

He mentioned that while the film begins with the disclaimer “All characters and incidents are fictional,” it shows the gruesome scene from 2002, where a Muslim village is burning down. As the scene begins unfolding one by one, Hindu men are seen torturing and brutally killing Muslims, without seeing their gender or age. He adds, “And in the most gut-wrenching moment, a Hindu man is shown raping a pregnant Muslim woman. I felt sick. Not because the scene was intense but because of what it was trying to say. Why? Why this portrayal? Why this narrative?”

After talking about the film, further in his tweet, he questions what Sukumaran was trying to prove with such scenes and why an actor like Mohalal was a part of “this conspiracy.” According to him, the movie “paints Hindus as savages, nationalists as villains.” He states that he walked out of the theatre with a heavy heart and trembling hands as he couldn’t believe what he had watched. “This is betrayal,” he added.

In the same tweet he also spoke about known Prithviraj’s political leaning and vowed to never watch another Mohanlal film again. “I never imagined that the man I adored would be part of a film that demonizes the very faith I was born into. That subtly mocks the people I call my own.” Tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP in his tweet he maintained that “Hindus have never been the instigators of riots.”

“Mr. @Mohanlal, you’ve stooped to a level I never thought possible. You let your name, your legacy, and your art become a weapon against your own people. Shame on you. Today, I didn’t just watch a movie. I watched my faith, my beliefs, and my fandom burn just like that village in your film,” he concluded.

It is to be noted that Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran are yet to react to the criticism.
