The Northeast Indian state of Manipur left an indelible mark on fashion’s global stage as renowned designer Robert Naorem showcased his latest “Art of East India” collection at Paris Fashion Week. Naorem, a Manipuri native, was among the 25 international artists from 25 different countries showcasing their best at the Melia La Defense in France’s capital, Paris. Naorem also showcased the “Incarnation” collection on the runway.
With his couture collection, Naorem exposed fashionistas to the traditional craftsmanship and contemporary designs emerging from the state. The collection featured a fusion of the native handloom blended in Western silhouettes, all the handiwork of master weavers back in Manipur.
Per the Ukhrul Times, Robert Naorem remarked his collection is “ about creating a bridge between our roots and the modern world—where traditional artistry can coexist with global fashion.”
Robert does not have formal training in designing or makeup, yet he made a dent in the international arena with relentless practice in his small salon based out of Bengaluru.
The Manipuri designer was the makeup director of Blenders Pride Bangalore fashion week in 2011. He has since assisted Bollywood celebrities in getting their best look. At the India Fashion Week London he was awarded “the most inspirational designer of 2017.”
With his striking design skills, Robert Naorem has given a new lease to ethnic Manipuri designs on a global platform.
More power to Northeast India and its hitherto undiscovered gems and talents.
