Is Jeffrey Epstein Dead Or Alive? Know All The Viral Conspiracy Theories That Sounds Too Good To Be True

Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier convicted on federal sex trafficking charges, was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York on August 10, 2019. He had been held without bail pending trial. The official cause of death was ruled suicide by hanging. Yet, more than five years later, conspiracy theories continue to circulate online; many of them gaining fresh traction following the U.S. Department of Justice’s release of declassified Epstein-related documents earlier.

Here is an account of all theories that have gone viral, what sparked them, and what investigations have actually found.

The Fortnite Account Theory: Was Epstein Gaming from Israel?

In early February 2026, shortly after the DOJ released a new batch of Epstein-related documents, social media users began circulating a claim that Epstein was still alive and gaming from Israel. The theory rested on three pieces of information pulled from the newly released files: an email dated May 7, 2019, referencing a $25.95 purchase of Fortnite’s in-game currency; a document listing one of Epstein’s YouTube usernames as “littlestjeff1”; and a Fortnite player statistics page showing an active account under the same name, with Israel listed as the account’s location.

The original post claimed the account had been actively used after Epstein’s reported death. The Fortnite account was later switched from public to private on February 5 or 6, 2026 — a change that further fueled speculation. Epic Games directly addressed the claims, with a spokesperson confirming the privacy settings were changed by the account holder, not Epic. CEO Tim Sweeney also publicly denied the conspiracy theory. Fact-checkers concluded the claims were false and that the email predated Epstein’s death, and no verified connection was established between the active account and Epstein himself.

The Tel Aviv Photo: Is Epstein Walking the Streets of Israel?

Meanwhile, a viral image purporting to show Jeffrey Epstein alive and walking on a road in Tel Aviv went viral on X. Fact-checkers found no credible news reports or verified sources confirming any post-death sighting. A reverse image search turned up no reliable documentation, and most significantly, a visible Google Gemini AI watermark appeared in the lower right corner. The Google Gemini watermark itself confirms that the image is AI-generated. The photograph, in essence, was fabricated.

The Prison Surveillance Anomalies: A Third Person and an “Orange Shape”

A CBS News investigation identified two previously unacknowledged anomalies in surveillance footage from the MCC on the night of Epstein’s death. Around 4:00 a.m., which is approximately two hours before his body was discovered, footage showed an unidentified person inside the Special Housing Unit where Epstein was held, not mentioned in the DOJ’s final report. Separately, footage captured a mysterious “orange shape” ascending the stairs toward Epstein’s cell hours before his death.

CBS News reported that these elements contradict certain claims made by DOJ officials and former corrections officers. The Office of Inspector General, which conducted its own review, responded to the CBS findings but stated its overall conclusions remained unchanged. These anomalies have not been publicly explained and continue to fuel theories that Epstein did not die alone—or did not die at all.

The 4Chan Post: An Eyewitness Account or Misinformation?

On the morning of August 10, 2019—the same day Epstein’s death was reported—an anonymous post appeared on 4Chan claiming the author had witnessed unusual activity at the prison the night before. The post described Epstein being removed from his cell shackled in a medical wheelchair and an unauthorized van arriving at the prison, which the poster believed had taken Epstein away before news of his death broke.

The newly released documents show that federal prosecutors took the post seriously enough to investigate its origin. The day after Epstein’s death, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman of the SDNY opened a grand jury proceeding and issued subpoenas to several companies, including 4Chan, Apple, AT&T, and Citibank, to identify who authored the message. Records tied to those subpoenas reference a prison officer named Roberto Grijalva, identified as an employee at the MCC. His name appears unredacted in bank records included in Citibank’s subpoena response and is also tied to the same officer whose statements were released as part of the prison’s internal investigation into Epstein’s death.

What the Declassified FBI Report Actually Shows

The 23-page FBI report, titled “Jeffrey Epstein Death Investigation,” includes previously unseen photographs of Epstein’s body, close-up images of injuries to his neck, portions of the post-mortem examination, and an internal timeline of his detention. The post-mortem report references scans showing two fractures on Epstein’s thyroid cartilage. The timeline confirms that Epstein had been placed on suicide watch after an apparent attempt on July 23, 2019, during which he accused his cellmate, former police officer Nicholas Tartaglione, of trying to kill him.

His cellmate was released the day before Epstein’s death. On the night of August 9 into the early hours of August 10, prison guards failed to conduct scheduled checks at 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and the camera system in the unit was down. Epstein’s body was found during a morning check. A redacted 17-page version of the same report was also published alongside the unredacted copy, with no official explanation provided for why both versions were included.
