Imtiaz Ali Announces His Next Film With Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari & Vedang Raina; Reveals Release Date

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has announced his next film, an untitled period love story, starring Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari. The film is set to release in theaters on Baisakhi, April 2026, marking Ali’s second collaboration with Dosanjh after their 2024 hit Amar Singh Chamkila. Production is scheduled to begin in August 2025.

The story explores love, longing, and human connection through a contemporary narrative with a period setting. Ali described the film as having “a big heart” and being “set on a large canvas, yet very personal.” He quoted poet Momin Khan Momin’s couplet, “‘Tum mere paas hote ho goya, Jab koi doosra nahin hota,’” adding, “Can love really be lost? Can home be taken away from someone’s heart?” The narrative follows a boy and a girl but also reflects broader themes of identity and a country’s story.

The film reunites Ali with composer A.R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil, known for their work on Rockstar, Tamasha, and Amar Singh Chamkila. The trio aims to deliver a memorable soundtrack. A statement noted, “As the journey unfolds, expect a film that moves you, music that stays with you, and a love story that becomes a part of you.”

Sharvari will play the female lead opposite Vedang Raina, marking their first collaboration with Dosanjh and Ali. Reports indicate Ali sought a talented actor for the role, with Sharvari fitting the part. The film features multiple character arcs, potentially including two additional female leads from different generations. Designer Sheetal Sharma, who worked on Chamkila, is on board for the project.

Dosanjh, riding high on Chamkila’s success, has a busy slate with Sardaar Ji 3, Detective Sherdil, Border 2, and Punjab 95. Sharvari is currently filming Alpha with Alia Bhatt, while Raina, after debuting in The Archies and starring in Jigra, joins Ali for the first time. Naseeruddin Shah adds depth to the ensemble cast.

Posts on X reflect excitement for the project, with fans praising the cast and Ali’s storytelling. Some noted the film’s Partition-era setting, blending romance with historical context. The Baisakhi release aligns with Punjabi cultural significance, a nod to Dosanjh’s roots.
