It was a disappointing evening for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans at Chepauk on Friday as their team fell short by 50 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL. Chasing a daunting target of 197, CSK were quickly on the back foot, losing wickets at regular intervals, and ultimately finishing at 146 for 8 in 20 overs. This defeat was particularly hard to digest, as it marked CSK’s first loss to RCB at Chepauk since 2008, leaving both players and fans frustrated.
The match began with CSK’s captain, MS Dhoni, opting to bowl first, putting RCB into bat. Though CSK made early inroads with a couple of key wickets, RCB managed to post a challenging total of 196 for 7. Captain Rajat Patidar played a brilliant knock, top-scoring with 51 off 32 balls. He was well supported by the openers, with Phil Salt contributing 32 off 16 balls and Virat Kohli adding 31 off 30 balls. Tim David’s fiery 22 not out off just 8 balls gave RCB’s total a boost in the final stages.
Dhoni coming at no 9 is lowest point in his career. He should retire gracefully than this embarrassment. #IPL2025 #RCBvCSK— kirat.13_ (@kirat8513) March 28, 2025
CSK’s bowlers tried their best to keep the pressure on, with Noor Ahmad standing out with impressive figures of 3/36. Matheesha Pathirana was also effective with 2/36, while veteran Ravichandran Ashwin (1/22) and Khaleel Ahmed (1/28) played supporting roles in trying to break RCB’s momentum.
What’s the point of #Dhoni batting at No. 9 in a 197-run chase when CSK is struggling at 100? CSK’s tactics today showed they had given up.
Dhoni at No. 9—just for a couple of sixes and PR? A few sixes for the fans won’t change the bigger picture. Maybe it’s time to ask—has… pic.twitter.com/TLekj4Qy1B— Amit Kumar (@AmitMaithil7) March 28, 2025
When it was CSK’s turn to chase, things quickly fell apart. Regular wickets meant they were never really in the hunt. Shivam Dube’s dismissal in the 13th over raised hopes that MS Dhoni, known for his finishing prowess, would step up to anchor the chase. However, fans were surprised when R. Ashwin instead joined Ravindra Jadeja at the crease. Dhoni only made his way to the middle in the 16th over, by which time the match was almost out of CSK’s reach.
Really disappointed with Dhoni coming to bat at no.9 after the game is over, could’ve easily came in at 6 and carried CSK’s hopes, why are you fooling us Thala 🙏 pic.twitter.com/ZtPK0stK63— Beast (@Beast__07_) March 28, 2025
Dhoni’s arrival brought a flicker of hope, with fans hoping for a vintage late-order show from the former captain. He remained unbeaten on 30 off 16 balls, but by then, the required run rate had climbed too high. His cameo was too little, too late, and fans took to social media to express their frustration, questioning whether an earlier arrival could have made a difference.
RCB’s bowlers, including Josh Hazlewood (3/21), Yash Dayal (2/18), and Liam Livingstone (2/28), were disciplined throughout the chase, consistently breaking partnerships and making sure CSK never gained any momentum. Their combined efforts ensured that CSK were never really in the game.
RCB sealed a comfortable 50-run victory, leaving CSK with plenty to reflect on. Despite the efforts from Ravindra Jadeja (23 off 17 balls) and Dhoni’s brief cameo, CSK’s chase was already doomed long before the final overs. The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the team and their supporters, especially after such a promising start to the season.
