In a recent copyright infringement case, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Google CEO Sundar Pichai with the Mumbai Police. The complaint was registered under the copyright act by Suneel Darshan, a producer and director. Along with Pichai, five others have been named in the case.

Darshan alleges that his film Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha which released back in 2017 is up on YouTube although rights for the film were not sold. A video of the film is reportedly garnering millions of views on the video sharing platform without due permission. As per multiple reports, the filmmaker believes that the illegal upload is also raking large profits. The film in question features Bollywood actors including Upen Patel.

As per reports on IndiaToday.in, he said, “I have not given the film rights to anyone. I have been fighting the battle against YouTube for many years. I am yet to receive any response from them. I make movies and they are my property. Someone else is uploading them with billions of views, YouTube and others are earning from it. I made so many complaints but no response at all. I finally had to approach the court on the matter, after which the court ordered Mumbai police to file an FIR and investigate.”

The case has been registered at the MIDC Police Station in Andheri on January 25, 2022. Darshan’s advocate explained that he has not received any response from Google. “Mr Darshan had complained to YouTube/Google and its officials several times but they ignored his complaints and continued to earn huge revenue for itself at Mr Darshan’s cost by illegally exploiting his intellectual property rights. Mr Darshan was left with no alternative but to approach the police initially and later on, the court for the registering of an FIR against YouTube/Google and their officials,” he said.

Others named in the FIR include Gautam Anand who is the head of YouTube, Joe Grier who serves as Grievance Officer and more. Investigate is currently underway. Meanwhile, the Indian Government honoured Sundar Pichai with a Padma Bhushan award recently.
