Fitbit Recalls 1.7 Million Smartwatches; Here’s Why

Fitbit the popular brand in the fitness tracker segment comes under Google and the company is known for offering premium health trackers with high-end features. However, it seems that the company is recalling around 1.7 million smartwatches which might cause burn hazards due to overheating of the lithium-ion battery. According to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission announcement the Fitbit Ionic smartwatches are prone to burn hazards.

As per the reports, One million watches were sold in the United States and 693,000 fitness trackers were sold in the global market. The notice claimed that two out of 78 users have reported third-degree burns.

“This voluntary recall is specific to Fitbit Ionic devices. It does not impact any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers. If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device,” reads the official Fitbit page.

According to the commission, users should “immediately stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatches and contact Fitbit to receive pre-paid packaging to return the device.”

Furthermore, a detailed report from CNBC suggests that the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatches sold in slate blue/burnt orange, charcoal/smoke gray, blue-gray/silver gray are witnessing the issues. Users who are using the special edition Adidas models in blue/silver-gray are also facing similar heating issues. The report also claims that the Model number FB503 smartwatches are prone to burn hazards.

The company has received 115 reports in the United States and 59 reports from the international market. Let’s see how Fitbit is going to resolve this issue on such a large scale.
